The Life In Attleboro Podcast
The Great Fire of 1898
When I first started the podcast, I started looking into the history of our city.
A few topics that caught my attention immediately were:
- Attleboro’s connection to G.I. Joe (I had the toys)
- Our role in the making of World Series trophies/rings, etc. (huge Sox fan)
- The Great Fire of 1898 (love history, in general)
Today’s podcast episode is about that last one.
The Great Fire of 1898 destroyed 19 businesses…
Burned more than three acres…
Left approx. 3,000 people without jobs…
And caused $750,000 in damage. That’s about $25 million in today’s money.
Here are a couple of images, courtesy of the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum (definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been!)
Carleton Legg, the former Executive Director of the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum (and retired teacher of 40 years), shared his knowledge and insight about this devastating fire, and how Attleboro learned from it - and changed for the better.
Enjoy Ep. 26 of The Life In Attleboro Podcast.
